Natural henna stains the top layer of skin, and the top layer of skin is always on its way out. That is why a stain fades rather than washing off: your skin is replacing itself underneath it. On hands and feet, where skin is thickest, a good stain lasts one to two weeks. On arms, shoulders and the belly, where skin is thinner and turns over faster, expect five to ten days.
What decides how long it lasts
Three things, in order. How long the paste stayed on. How warm you kept it. What you did in the first 24 hours after it came off. Everything else, including the quality of the paste, is settled before you sit down, and Saarah's paste is mixed fresh for every booking.
Five things that add days
- Leave the paste on for at least three to six hours. Overnight is better, with the area wrapped in a soft cloth.
- Keep it warm while the paste is on. A cold hand takes a lighter stain.
- Scrape the dry paste off. Do not wash it off. Avoid water for the next twelve hours.
- Rub a little natural oil or balm over the design each day. It protects the stain from water and friction.
- Avoid hot water, sea water, chlorine, body scrubs and dishwashing gloves for as long as you can.
What the colour does
Bright orange when the paste comes off. Deep red-brown 48 hours later. Then a slow fade over the following week or two. If you are having henna for a wedding, this is why it goes on one to three days before the day.
