Henna aftercare: the first 48 hours, step by step

What to do from the moment the paste is on until the stain reaches its deepest colour.

Most of what makes a great stain happens after Saarah has packed up. This is the short version of the aftercare card every client leaves with.

While the paste is on

  • Keep still until it is dry to the touch, usually 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Keep it on for at least three to six hours. Overnight is better.
  • Keep the area warm. Wrap hands or feet in a soft cloth if you are sleeping in it.
  • Saarah seals the design so you do not need lemon and sugar at home.

Taking it off

  • Scrape or rub the dry paste off with your hands or a blunt edge. Do not wash it off.
  • Rub a little natural oil into the design. Coconut, olive or the balm Saarah gives you.
  • No water on the design for twelve hours.

The next two days

  • The stain is orange on day one and deepens to red-brown by day two. That is normal.
  • Oil or balm every day. Gloves for dishes. Short showers.
  • Avoid sea water, chlorine, scrubs and hot tubs.

If something is wrong

Natural henna does not itch, burn or blister. If it does, wash the paste off immediately and message Saarah. Real henna gives an orange stain. A black stain from a "henna" cone is not henna at all.
